Ruth Charney, president-elect of the Association for Women in Mathematics and professor at Brandeis University, says she would encourage women to “stick to their career desires in light of overall gender imbalance,” explaining that for her, “gender imbalance in mathematics has been a motivating factor.”

“Like more or less everyone in the field,” Charney says, “I went through periods when I felt discouraged, or wondered if I would enjoy some other career better. But whenever I thought about quitting, a voice in my head would remind me that quitting would be playing right into the stereotypes of women in mathematics. My stubborn side would then rise up and declare, ‘no way!’”

Charney says she developed this attitude shortly after she received her PhD. “Someone discovered a serious mistake in my thesis,” she recalls. “Needless to say, I was distraught, but one thing was clear to me: I would fix that mistake before I quit. Of course I did fix that mistake, although it took eight months. I didn’t quit, and after that, no one doubted that I was in this for the long haul.”
